Why Fair Trade?

Modern Day Slavery exists everywhere, even here in America.  There is slave labor, similar to but not legal like American slavery 400 years ago.  Slave labor includes, domestic servants, workers in restaurants, nail salons, farms, factories/sweat shops just to name some of the most common areas slaves are used.  Slaves are people that are coerced, tricked, or forced into working and are not free to leave under threats of violence, death, or safety of family members.  Slavery exists around the world and there are companies out there that are taking steps to source their materials from places where people are treated well and paid what a living wage.  There are other companies/corporations right here in America, that source their products from places where children are enslaved, adults are forced to work and people are being beaten, tortured, and abused.  Some of the products that we use everyday are brought to us by the hands of slaves; sugar, chocolate, coffee, tea, fruits, vegetables, clothes, shoes, toys, rugs, bricks, the list goes on.  The problem is that so many people have no idea that there are 27 million slaves in this world!

I want to help raise awareness of this social injustice. If you have an event that you would like me to speak or teach please contact me at my email address thecookingactivist@gmail.com.  I would love to come to your school, office, parents group, church small group or where ever you will be to educate everyone about how the things we buy and eat can make a difference!
